NITA-U is currently implementing Phase 3 of the National Data Transmission Backbone Infrastructure and eGovernment Infrastructure (NBI/EGI).

The works under this project majorly include the installation of Optical Fibre Cable to connect the Katuna and Mutukula border points and to complete the Kyenjojo – Masindi OFC Link.

NITA – U is holding a series of sensitization workshops with the Local Government Leaders to create awareness of the community in and around all Districts along Phase 111 route.

The District Leadership will in turn disseminate the information on the NBI/EGI Project to the community.

The first workshop was held in Masaka Town as Phase 3 implementation is commencing from the Kampala – Masaka and Masaka – Mutukula legs, Town.

The workshop included the district leadership from the towns of Wakiso, Mpigi, Kalungu, Masaka, Masaka, Lwengo and Rakai

The Executive Director; NITA-U, Mr. James Saaka briefed the leadership of the Local Governments on the NBI/EGI project including the scope, benefits and the implementation schedule.

Phase 1 of the project connected Kampala, Mukono, Jinja, Bombo and Entebbe and 27 Government Ministries and Departments to a 198km network of optical fibre.

Phase II of the Project was completed with a total of 1400.734kms of Optical Fiber Cable connecting Busia, Tororo, Mbale, Malaba, Kumi, Soroti, Lira, Gulu, Elegu, Masindi, Kyenjojo, Fort Portal, Kasese, Bushenyi and Mbarara was laid.

On completion of NBI/EGI Project the following benefits will be realized among others; seamless and secure communication amongst Government institutions, high speed connectivity throughout the country to all major towns and District headquarters.

This will enable the provision of eGovernment Services such as eHealth, internet, online Education, eTax, Integrated Financial Management System (IFMS) to all these districts and Towns.
