ICT Sector Stakeholders Consultative Workshop

The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance has held an ICT Sector Stakeholders Consultative Workshop whose theme was “Digital Uganda”. The consultative meeting was aimed at engaging the sector to discuss and plan for a common ICT Vision for the country.

The digital vision will enumerate measures on how to enhance digital literacy for inclusion among the population so as to narrow the divide between the educated and the uneducated and generally change the mind-set about uptake of ICTs.

The workshop was officiated by the Rtn. Honorable Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, in his remarks thanked the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance and its agencies for this initiative mentioning that access to the internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity.

The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance is in its initial stages of developing a holistic all-encompassing ICT systems across Government.  

Minister for ICT and National Hon. Frank Tumwebaze called on all actors in the sector to own the document being developed saying that it will form the blue print on how ICTs are implemented in the country to serve citizens better in the digital economy.

Speaking at the dialogue Frank Tumwebaze emphasized the role of ICT as the backbone for improvement and enabler for service delivery that is more efficient and timely.

“ICTs are here to stay and they can only continue advancing and disrupting the way we live. We therefore have to be prepared to harness them for positive growth” he said.    

Government has invested in infrastructure and connectivity and we are trying to make sure that we achieve affordability and therefore inclusion he added.

ICT Minister Frank Tumwebaze announced a major reduction by nearly 33% in data costs for government institutions.

“Government concluded the procurement of Bulk Internet Bandwidth for MDAs/LGs which shall lead to a reduction in the cost of Internet Bandwidth,” Tumwebaze said.

“Effective July 1, 2017, the cost shall reduce from $300 to $190 per megabits per second per month for all Government MDAs, LGs and target user groups such as hospitals, research institutions, Business Process Outsourcing agencies and innovation hubs.”

The event was attended by executives from the ICT agencies, media owners, different ICT associations as well as private sector partners.
