Wednesday, May 31, 2017

National Information Technology Authority – Uganda (NITA-U) held an awareness session on IT Certification for MDAs. The workshop aimed at orienting the Heads of IT and Procurement of Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies on the Regulations, Policies and Directives governing IT Certification and the related procedures and requirements.

The IT Certification initiative that is being implemented by NITA-U aims at creating orderly and systematic development of the IT Sector, consumption and export of locally produced IT products as well as protecting rights of IT consumers.

In his keynote address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Mr. Vincent Bagiire emphasized that; “IT Standards are the backbone to development of the local IT industry, ensuring the safety and quality of products and services, facilitating international trade and protecting interests of the consumers, with the Government being the largest consumer of these services.”

He further reminded the participants that with standards and regulations in place, Government has passed a directive that No Provider will be allowed to supply government with IT products and services unless they are dully certified by NITA-U.

At the same workshop, NITA-U, Executive Director James Saaka thanked the participants for the goodwill and support so far extended to the IT Certification Initiative and further called upon all Government departments and consumers of IT products and services to embrace IT Certification so as to harness its various benefits. Through this, NITA-U shall deliver on her mandate of transforming Uganda into a knowledge-based Society.
