NITA-U to Implement Government e-Payment Gateway Service
NITA-U is in the process of implementing a Government e-Payment Gateway Service to meet the increasing usage of technology and access to Government services. The Government agenda too is to move to a cashless and chequeless economy in the Medium term.
At the moment there is no real time visibility for Government revenues by the Treasury. This is intensified by the inability to aggregate payments for different services offered by the same MDA; which increases transaction costs to the client.
NITA-U held a stakeholder engagement with MDAs in the pilot phase of the project and other key stakeholders to obtain feedback and consensus needed for the successful implementation of the e-Payment Gateway.
Speaking at the meeting Ag. Assistant Account General Godfrey Ssemugooma said that the e-Payment Gateway would reduce time and monetary costs involved in development, implementation and operation of individual payment platforms by MDAs.
“This will enable MDAs and Local Governments, to quickly and efficiently deploy sector specific e-services by leveraging a common payment Gateway and in the long run promote e-Commerce in Uganda” he said.
Speaking at the same meeting, NITA-U Board Member Amina Zawedde said that Uganda will see an increase in uptake of public e-Services due to a seamless payment experience.
The e-Payment gateway too will promote financial inclusion in Uganda through enhanced use of mobile money to pay for public services especially among the financially underserved communities.
The ePayment Gateway will be implemented in a phased approach starting with a Pilot phase that is expected to commence in February 2018.
